Copy+ cannot see source drive

Copy+ cannot see source drive

Postby tiptonian » Wed Dec 01, 2010 6:43 pm

So far I have removed 320G HDD from Amstrad DRX780 HD box and connected it to SATA port in PC. It shows in the Disk Management tool As Disk 2 - Basic - 298.09GB - Online containing one healthy partition XTV_STR_DSK (I:). I have also connected brand new 1.5T HDD which I initialised and is showing as Disk 1 - Basic - 1397.26GB - Online, and is empty (Unallocated). On running Copy+ (latest ver 1.2.0.8 ) I can select Drive 1 as the destination drive, but disk/drive 2 is not listed under select source drive. Refresh scans all 3 drives currently connected to the PC so it appears it knows the drive exists, but it is not recognised as a Sky disk. :(

Pleas post your log file (C:\Program Files\Copy+\Copy+.log) from after an attempt to detect your disk. Please close Copy+ before attempting to take a copy of the log or else it will be empty or incomplete.
Most likely you have a corrupt partition table with the wrong partition type ID. This happens quite a lot...
There is a fix tool in the FAQ section to repair it.

The boot record and various other things look well messed up.
You could try the BPB repair tool in the FAQ section. No guarantees though.

Tried the BPB tool without success. Dialog was:
<<
C:\copyplus>fixskybpb 2 -f

Sky BIOS Paramter Block Fixer 1.03
==================================

Opening \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE2...

Read and check MBR...
Partition start 0000003f for 2542e231 sectors.
This appears to be a 320GB FAT32 LBA partition.

Read and check BPB...
BPB total sector count 2542e231 does not conform with geometry.
This means your drive is corrupt and probably appears unformatted in Windows
and unrecognised in Sky+ and/or Copy+.
But let's see if we can fix that...

Read and check for backup BPB at LBA offset+6 (00000045)...
BPB total sector count 2542e231 does not conform with geometry.

Recreating Sky+ BPB from first principles...
Partition total sector count = 2542e231
MBR total sector count = 2542d310
MBR sectors per fat = 00012a0e
First FAT cluster used for video = 0002f1cb (LBA 00bec73b)
Total video clusters = 00031b94
Bad clusters reserved for VFAT = 00000033
Yeay! - This seems to be a valid BPB for a 320GB Sky+ drive!

The BPB now seems to be a bit more valid....
...at least as far as this program can tell.

Checking FAT 1 present at LBA 0000005f...
Sorry, the FAT signature was not found.
>>

Then tried the MBR tool, but just got
<<
C:\copyplus>fixskymbr 2
Fixing MBR on drive 2...
Drive size 320 GB FAT32 LBA Partition
This drive is already partitioned
>>

The new log file is:

The disk was working fine in the HD box. Should I refit it and see if it still working, maybe try a planner rebuild?

You could try...
However the Sky box operates on a principle of "carry on regardless".
Copy+ is a little more cautious and doesn't proceed unless everything checks out.
In this case there are quite a few things wrong with the disk, so it is stopping.

Re: Copy+ cannot see source drive

Hi. Now got the disk back in the Sky box and the recordings and planner stuff are still there, which I was a bit worried about. I've tried to run the planner rebuild, but it fails - "housekeeping" message shows for about 3 seconds, then the box just switches off and reboots. Since I understand Planner Rebuild is essentially like chkdsk I'm guessing a planner rebuild failure also points to disk problems. In recent weeks we've also noticed an increase in the number of screen errors when watching recordings and little glitches like frames have been missed. Again could point to disk problems.

Since it appears I cant copy the disk with copy+, looks like we'll have to watch everything or dump it to the DVD/HDD recorder and then I can fit the new "virgin" disk straight into the box without copying stuff to it first.

Thanks for your help though.

I don't know what more you were expecting, but that is what planner rebuild usually does? Perfectly normal if you ask me...

I agree. If there aren't errors during live viewing (indicating reception is OK) this tends to point at a failing disk.
Check the disk with the manufacturers tools to be sure.

Re: Copy+ cannot see source drive

Hi,

Been having the same problem in that my Sky HD HDD is not being recognised in Copy +.

I've run the FixSkyBPB and it comes back saying 'This does not appear to be a FAT32 Partitioned drive' - yet in disk management (Windows XP) it shows 279.45 GB FAT32 Healthy.

I can even hop onto the disk and look at the files through IE.

It sees my destination drive WD20EARX without a problem.

Have had a peak at using Darwin and this sees the source drive, mounts it and shows all the recordings.

Any ideas what the problem is? I have a Samsung SkyHD box.

Thanks in advance.
