Dest not recognised when copying image to new drive SOLVED

Postby Robbie D » Sat Sep 29, 2007 9:44 am

Hi, not sure if anyone can offer any advice, but this is my problem:-
I bought a 250Gb hard drive Sky + upgrade kit and installed it into my Pace digibox and it seems to work ok.
I then wanted to transfer the recordings from my old 40Gb hard drive to the new 250Gb drive, so with the latest version of copy + I put the old drive in a caddy, made an image file to my PC drive, then disconnected the drive from the caddy, then connected my new 250Gb hoping that I could copy the image file onto the new drive, but I can't select the 250Gb drive from the destination drop down menu. The disk is recognised when I hotplug it in, so I don't understand why it's not in the destination drop down list.
Does anyone have any idea on what I might have done wrong or how to copy my 40Gb drive to the new 250Gb one?
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated,
thanks, Rob.

For a destination drive to be recognised in Copy+ it must be un-partitioned and unformatted. Because your chosen destination disk has been used in Sky+ previously, it already has a formatted partition on it.

Please go into Windows Disk management and delete any partitions off your destination drive. Make absolutely sure you have selected the correct drive before deleting anything!

Note that this will erase all recordings off your destination drive. Unfortunately it is not currently possible to 'merge' recordings onto an existing Sky+ disk.

On a similar vain.
I have the dreaded stuck in standby problem (for the second time) on my Sky supplied Thomson DSI 6210 (Sky+160).

I bought a Samsung HA250JC to copy my Sky+ disk onto and 2 USB caddies as I intended to use my laptop to run the stable version of Copy+.

I disabled all of the auto-protect functions on my virus package.

I saw both drives on the Disk manager. I initialized the HA250JC as a Basic drive and it was online and unallocated so I started Copy+.

I immediately got an 'Out of Memory' message, which I OK'ed and while I could see the source drive, the destination drop down menu still would not show the HA250JC drive.

I am concerned that my jumper settings are incorrect but I have the Sky+ HDD on Cable Select and the HA250JC on master, I have tried a few different jumper variations but still no luck.

Help me please, it getting near christmas and things could get nasty at home without a working Sky+.

Sorry you are having problems.

The out of memory error is caused by USB caddies or IDE interfaces that do not correctly return a "friendly" device name via the setup API. This name is used by Copy+ to display the make and model of HDD when you select it.

The bug has been fixed in the latest Beta release, 1.2.0.1. Please see the release history:
  • Fix "Out of Memory" error when a drive or drives do not have a "Friendly Name" available.

If you are still having problems while using the latest Beta version, please let me know and I will investigate further.

Thanks, Stuart.

Many thanks for getting back to me so quickly Stuart,

I downloaded the BETA version and tried again, with no luck. I checked all the items listed in the help. I even tried connecting with IEEE 1394 cables to no avail. At a stage, with IEEE 1394, Copy+ was showing both drives in the source drive menu and nothing in the destination drive.

If I plug in the HA250JC only, with IEEE 1394, the computer recognises the drive in the taskbar, but not the Disk Management, I then plug the Sky+ drive in via IEEE 1394, the HA250JC disappears from the taskbar and the Sky+ drive appears in the Disk Management. The Sky+ drive shows up in the Copy+ source and nothing in the destination drive.

Pluging the Sky+ drive in via IEEE 1394 and the HA250JC via USB, both drives show up in the Disk Management, but again the Sky+ drive shows up in the Copy+ source and nothing is in the destination drive.

I'll take any advice you have.

NP - Disks which have valid Sky partitions already on them are assumed to be SOURCE disks. Empty un-partitioned drives are assumed DESTINATIONS. This is to avoid potential accidents.

Please see my second reply in this thread:

Edit: Although reading your posts again, it doesn't appear like your destination disk has been used in Sky+ yet - So maybe this isn't the problem.

You need to get both disks correctly recognised by Windows Disk Management. Either USB, firewire (IEEE 1394) or internally attached via IDE, or any combination of these, are fine. However if Windows Disk Management can not see the drives, Copy+ doesn't have a hope of working. Usually drives not being recognised turn out to be hardware incompatibilities. I'm happy to offer advice and suggestions, but these things are often hard to resolve "remotely".

I can see both drives in the Disk Management, the Sky+. My HA250JC has not been used before.
It seems to be a similar problem to what Xorro is having.

The HA250JC drive comes up as Disk 1, Basic, 232.87 GB Online, 232.87GB unallocated

The Sky+ HDD comes up as Disk 2, Basic, 152.67 GB Online, XTV_STR_DSK (F:), 152.67 GB FAT32, Healthy

I've copied a bit of the Log below and can send more if required.
Sky+ is set as master, HA250JC is set as slave (no jumper on).

Enumerate drive 2,2: Initio HA250JC USB Device
Could not get partiton info drive 2 (The data area passed to a system call is too small (122))

You are absolutely sure that you have:
1. Not got any partitions on the HA250JC
2. Have initalised the disk as a basic, not dynamic, volume
Windows Vista refers to these as:
Basic Disk = MBR (Master Boot Record)
Dynamic Disk = GPT (GUID Partition Table)

Your log is at odds with what you are seeing in disk management. You are saying the HA250JC is disk 1 in disk management, but log says it is drive 2?

If possible I'd like to see the entire log for all the entire enumerations of your drives.

I'm running Windows XP, sorry for the confusion I probably powered them up in a different order when trying again.

Disk Management gives for HA250JC
Disk 1, Basic, 232.87 GB, Online, 232.87 GB, Unallocated

The properties for this drive are:
Location 0
Partition Style: Master Boot Record (MBR)
Capacity: 238457 MB
Unallocated Space: 238457 MB

When I right click on this drive it gives me 3 options, new partition, properties and help.

The Sky+ HDD gives
Disk 2, Basic, 152.67 GB, Online, XTV_STR_DSK (F:), 152.67 GB FAT32, Healthy

Jumpers are: HA250JC - Slave (no jumpers on the drive)
Sky+ HDD - Master

The log gives:

No, the above is fine.
I'm wondering if somehow the drive has got an Extended Partition on it? And hence has more than 4 partition entries.

My code only allocates enough space for 4 partitions when querying a disk. This is all that should be necessary, as a Sky HDD only contains a single Master Boot Record, which can in turn only hold a maximum of 4 partition entries. Usually only one is used, and the remaining 3 are empty. Any disk with more than four entries obviously isn't a Sky disk.

Just a guess, but can I suggest creating a single partition and then deleting it? Another option would be to manually delete the MBR with some tools and start again from scratch.

I have a tool I can send you to dump out the MBR to a file so I can look at it, I think that is perhaps the only way we'll get to the bottom of this one. May I mail it to your forum registration e-mail address please?

Thanks for the disk image. As I expected you have a DOS extended partition on this disk from LBA 0x3EC1 with a length of 0x3EC1 sectors.
This is the first time I have ever seen this on a virgin initialized disk. Don't know how that got there, but you will need to delete it somehow before continuing.

I would suggest creating an NTFS partition to the full size of the drive. Then delete it. Hopefully this will clear down the partition table so there are no entries (basically deleting the unused extended partition).

If that doesn't work you may have to resort to the command line DISKPART tool.

I created the NTFS partition for the whole drive, but it clear the partition table.

I then used the DISKPART tool from the command prompt. I selected the HA250JC disk and performed a clean all, which zero'd the disk.

Copy+ has recognised both source and destination disks and at present it is copying.

Stuart thank you for all your help, you have saved christmas in my household. :-)
