Copy+ cannot find the recordings

Postby Ikirk » Tue Jan 18, 2011 2:37 am

Hi,

I'm in the process of replacing my original 300GB HDD with a 1TB and I've hit a problem, probably of my own doing, and really need some help please.

When I attached my original HDD using a USB caddie Copy+ would not list it, and instead report an error. I checked the log files and got a message about the BPB not being correct, so from other posts here got the impression I had to run FixSkyBPB. did that and that resolved the issue > Copy+ could now list my drive fine.

But now the program listing is blank and when I attempt to do the Copy I get errors about "Cannot determine endian, or VC2 incorrect".

Below is part of the log file generated after I tried to copy:

Anyone have any ideas what I can try please? Dont want to put HDD back into box in case it messes up the data, so no Sky at home until I can figure this out...

Looks like you recordings have been made with some different disk formatting parameters (BPB values) from what Copy+ is expecting for a normal Sky disk, and also different from what was originally should have been present on the disk. Unfortunately the values now present as calculated by the fix program aren't correct - so presumably the BPB damage occurred some time ago while the drive was still in the box and before you made your recordings.
As a result your recordings can not be read successfully by Copy+ - Sorry.

Thanks for your reply pcbbc. I thought I might not be able to Copy+ the files - just wondering if it is safe to put disk back in Sky box now, to see if the programs can at least be watched. Wife not too happy with me losing her recordings...

Another thing I noticed is that on Windows Explorer I can see all the files on the source Sky disk (all the directories and .str files within them, and they report the file size as normal eg. 1.4 GB) but on Computer Management > Disk Management it lists the drive as 100% free, which is strange - as if there was nothing on it.

So I tried to copy/paste one of the large .str files to my PC hard drive and got an error - wouldnt let me copy it.

Could a "bad" BPB explain that issue? Or could we be looking at something else like MBR/partition issue?

Thanks again for your help.

Probably safe to put the disk back, but maybe you will get overwriting issues if you make new recordings. As where recordings are made is determined in part by the BPB values.

STR files are outside of the FAT32 file system and stored in custom XTVFS extensions designed by NDS. As such Windows can not access them or recognise the space they use, despite the fact they are listed as files in the file system directory.

So I tried to copy/paste one of the large .str files to my PC hard drive and got an error - wouldnt let me copy it.
Could a "bad" BPB explain that issue? Or could we be looking at something else like MBR/partition issue?
That is because of the above and these files are not marked used in the regular FAT32 FAT.

Ah... OK, understood. Will try to put the disk back and see what happens - might be able to recover something to the DVD recorder then. Fingers crossed! :)
Thanks for looking at this issue for me, much appreciated.

Just for info in case someone else hits similar problems:

Thanks to input from pcbbc suggesting the data was intact I thought I'd also give +Extract a go on my original Sky+ disk, before putting it back into the box - and to my surprise after a few moments waiting +Extract listed all the recordings! So with that I was able to extract the STR files for all the FTA channels like BBC and ITV - leaves the Sky channel programmes out but at least it's something for me to backup and store on my PC for now.

The most recent recordings (done after Xmas) were fine to convert from STR to MPEG within +Extract, no problem, but the older ones failed to generate a working MPEG this straightforward way. For those I tried to open the STR file with ProjectX and while they wouldnt come up OK (gave an error during conversion to .TS) I noticed that if I edited/cutoff the start finish points and move them slightly, cutting a very small section at start and at the end, it would then allow me to generate a TS file - and as my Sky+ box was set to record 5 min before and 5 min after this worked OK, didn't lose any content of those programmes, so I can now salvage a few recordings. Which means I can probably leave the dog house now! 8)

Thanks again pcbbc - and Neil (+Extract).
