Sky HD drive not recognised

Any other questions about the software?

Re: Sky HD drive not recognised

I have the same problem as above.

I'm running Windows 7.

I installed the XTVFS drivers, rebooted, then installed the latest beta version of Copy+. (I also tried the stable version).

The original Sky HD drive appears in Windows Disk Management. Windows is telling me that I need to initialise the disk in order for Logical Disk Management to be able to see it, but I'm pretty sure that I don't want to do that (it's not mentioned that you should in any of the documentation).

The drive doesn't appear in Copy+, but Copy+ does scan all three drives that are visible.

Is this likely to need the boot sector repair program? If so, please send it to my profile email address.

Thanks

Will

You do not need to do anything to get an existing disk to show in Windows Disk Management.
It should be present and showing as Healthy, XTV_STR_DSK and FAT32 format.
If not, something is wrong....

The drive doesn't appear in Copy+, but Copy+ does scan all three drives that are visible.
Copy+ logs (C:\Program Files\Copy+) from after an attempt to recognise the drive might help. Please CLOSE Copy+ before taking copies of the log or it will be empty or incomplete.
Also a picture of the Windows Disk Management screen is sometimes helpful.

Tried it on my Vista PC as well now,l ogs from that quoted below. First startup was without the drive attached. Then hit refresh after inserting the drive.

Windows Disk Management doesn't show anything for the disk in the top (Logical) section, just says that a drive needs to be initialised. Should I do a planner rebuild before trying again?

Original drive no longer works in Sky HD box either, nothing appearing in planner. Has my original HDD been hosed?

I had a similar problem when adding a drive internally. Windows could see the drive but COpy+ couldn't. I assume you have loaded the required drivers. In my case on a Dell PC running XP, I had to add the drive in the BIOS, which in the Dell's case you do by hitting F2 early in the boot.

And which drive is the Sky+ one?

You seem to have:
1. A 250GB disk as drive 0 - I assume your OS disk (Internal ATA - ST3250310AS ATA Device)
2. A 1TB disk as drive 5 Formatted as NTFS and attached via USB (External USB - Seagate FreeAgent USB Device)

Neither of these look like the 750GB drive, or appear to have come from a Sky+ box.
If this disk is visible in the bottom section of Windows Disk Management and correctly mounted by Windows (FAT32, XTV_STR_DSK, Healthy) it should be showing in this log.
It isn't (as far as I can tell) and therefore I assume there is something wrong with it, or something wrong with your PC.

Neither of those disks is the Sky HD disk. It's not showing as being healthy in Windows Disk Management; I'm being asked to initialise it on both a Windows Vista PC and a Windows 7 laptop.

The disk works fine in the Sky HD box now - it seems that you can't view recorded programmes in the planner without having a satellite signal coming in for some reason.

I've got a different dock coming just to check that's not the problem - is there something I can check the Sky HD drive with to see if there's a problem with the drive (although it's working in my Sky HD box now fine).

Tried a different dock and all works fine. I think the other dock wasn't providing enough power to spin up the disk.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi

I am having the same problem. My 300GB Sky disk (WD3000JS) appears in disk management but shows as uninitialised (I am using Win7 64bit). You mention above that it might be a corrupt BIOS Parameter Block / Boot Record. Could you send me the program to fix it please.

Thanks

hi there

am complete newbie to this and need your help !! i ordered Plexus USB to IDE & SATA Adapter With Power Adapter (Supports 2.5" / 3.5" IDE & Serial ATA Hard Disk) last night and its arrived today ...am trying to copy programmes from sky+ box onto my new sky HD box.

i have an external 120gb hd - the sky programmes from my thompson 160gb are only around 90gb --- am i correct in using copy+ and connecting my sky+ hard drive to the above adapter and then moving the data to my external hd and then copying it to the new sky HD box.

i can get my pc to see my external hd which shows as unallocated but i cant for the life of me get the sky+ hard drive to be recognised....its says disk 2 not initialised and when i try to it says disk not ready....

what should i do next ?? is there an easier way or am i missing something basic..

thanks in advance for your help please

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

You should not, under any circumstances, initialise the existing drive. This is only necessary for a brand new drive.
If the drive is showing as not initialised and giving a "not ready error" you have a hardware fault.
Either you have a faulty disk, or faulty USB adapter or cable.

Unfortunately I have had many, many people with problems like this - and the cause is almost always faulty adapters, especially the cheaper ones. In some cases one disk will work, but another will fail - perhaps a hardware incompatibility or power supply issue.
My suggestion would be to try a different adapter or USB caddy to verify that it is not the drive at fault (but if it was working in the Sky box previously it is unlikely).

hi there

thanks for your fast response...so just to get it right...i can see in the copy+ app the destination drive is 120gb generic usb drive ok but when using the new adaptor in the link i bought that i cant see the sky hard drive...(whichg worked as i put it back in and connect it all up again to sky+ box and it worked ok). its a seagate u series 9 160gb one....

so you think it must be this adaptor i bought ?? should i just go to say maplin and buy one of the caddies ??

thanks again for your support

Yes - If the hard drive works in the Sky box but is showing as "Uninitialized" and "Not Ready" on the PC this is almost certainly the adapter.
I am assuming of course you have connected it up correctly and are using the supplied power adapter to power the drive (it can NOT be powered from USB alone).
Obviously I can not guarantee 100% that if you buy a caddy from Maplin that it will work. But over 95% of the time using a different caddy does resolve these sorts of issues.

hi there

you were correct in your advice...i bought a dynamode caddy and it started working perfectly...i copied data from sky+ box onto my external disk drive corectly...and then hooked up the caddy via sata cables to the sky hd box (just left the dard disk in the case as couldnt get it out of sky hd box)....it didnt see the shy hd at first so i deleted the anytime recordings that were on there and then copied the data from external hard drive to sky hd. i set settings to big endian as i have an amstrad 890 - problem i know have is when i put it all back together the sky hd box wont come out of standy....what you think is wrong ??

thanks again for your help

How exactly did you delete the recordings?
Regardless, deleting recordings won't make a disk that has already been used in a Sky box visible as a destination in Copy+.
You must delete the existing partition of the destination drive for it to be visible.

Missing cable perhaps?
Or you haven't waited long enough for box to boot up?
Or you didn't copy the programs on to the destination correctly? Your comments above about "deleting anytime recordings" has me worried.
